Following the introduction of the Dolphins in 2023, NRL executives spoke openly about the desire to further expand the competition. On 9 April 2020, ARL Commissioner Wayne Pearce announced the NRL would return on 28 May. It was feared that some teams would not survive this period without income, as it was foreseen as a financial catastrophe. The following day after Queensland closed its borders — the NRL announced that the season would have to be suspended indefinitely. ABC Local Radio holds the rights to broadcast seven NRL matches weekly in the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, and New South Wales. In 2019 (the NRL introduced Magic Round), which featured all matches playing at Lang Park in Brisbane over the weekend. It features two Round 1 NRL matches and from 2025, a Round 3 Super League game as well. Beginning in the 2024 season Rugby League Las Vegas is an annual event held at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas showcasing the sport of rugby league. The 2007 finals series saw the South Sydney Rabbitohs return to finals football for the first time in decades. The weather during the middle of the season was less than ideal, with cyclonic conditions severely affecting many NRL games played in Sydney and Newcastle.
